Where should a factory start with automation?

Start with a repeatable, measurable process whose constraint materially affects throughput, quality, safety or operating continuity—not with a preferred machine or robot brand.

Short answer

Begin with the production outcome, not the robot.

The right intervention may be a retrofit, purpose-built machine, robot cell, vision system or a connected data layer. Choose the technology after the process, interfaces and acceptance criteria are understood.

Is the process stable?

The current method, inputs and expected output should be explainable. If the work changes every day, stabilize the process before selecting equipment.

Are volume and cycle-time targets known?

Use actual production volume, peak periods, planned stops and required time per part to size the system responsibly.

What variation must the system handle?

Document the size, weight, geometry, presentation and product variants that the automation must accept.

Can quality be measured?

Define defects, pass/fail criteria and the verification method so the new system improves consistency—not only speed.

Where are the safety and ergonomic risks?

Map repetitive lifting, pinch points, heat, dust, chemicals and the areas where people and equipment interact.

Are upstream and downstream interfaces understood?

Review space, conveyors, existing machines, power, controls and product flow before and after the target operation.

How will success be accepted?

Agree on numbers and test methods before build: throughput, pass rate, availability, quality and recovery after a stoppage.
